Caulfield Grammar School - Senior School Building

This five-storey (plus basement) vertical learning hub sets a national benchmark as Australia’s first 6 Star Green Star (Design & As-Built v1.3) school building and the first registered school project to target WELL Gold certification.

The project required complex staged enabling works, including the demolition of existing structures, major infrastructure diversions (sewer, water, electrical), substation upgrades, and switchboard modifications.

Designed to deliver best-in-class Indoor Environment Quality, the building integrates:

• Advanced air quality and filtration systems

• Smart building technologies (interconnected lighting, mechanical, and metering systems)

• Rainwater harvesting and reuse

• Low-toxicity materials and biophilic design

• PV solar generation and energy-efficient façades

• Thermal comfort and daylight optimisation via advanced building physics modelling

Through our role as Green Star AP, WELL AP, and sustainability consultants, our SUSTAIN team led the sustainability strategy, working in close collaboration with the School and design partners DesignInc and 3XN.

Our contribution included:

• Building physics modelling to validate and refine design proposals

• Stakeholder engagement with students and staff to align educational and environmental outcomes

• Integration of WELL and Green Star principles from inception through to delivery

• Focused health and well-being outcomes, including active design and strong connections to nature

The result is a landmark education facility that exemplifies future-ready design. With a workplace-inspired entry, flexible collaborative spaces, and sustainability embedded at every level, the building redefines what a learning environment can be.
