Westmead Hospital Palliative Care Unit

As part of the NSW Government’s $93 million World Class End of Life Care Program, a new palliative care unit will be built on Level 5 of the Clinical Acute Services Building at Westmead Hospital.

Location

NSW

Client

NSW Health

Designed with input from health professionals, carers and the community, the unit will feature modern supportive care bedrooms with ensuites, communal spaces, outdoor areas, and a multi-faith room, ensuring a culturally sensitive and home-like environment. The location was carefully chosen for its proximity to hospital services while maintaining patient privacy and access to nature. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance palliative care across NSW, with additional facilities planned in Wyong, Orange, Tamworth, and Penrith.

This project presented us with unique challenges due to acoustic considerations stemming from the extension being placed directly above the main chiller plant and its proximity to a helicopter pad. The integration with the base building and medical gas systems required in-depth investigations to ensure minimum disruption to other occupied floors.
